DIY Personalized Handmade Towel Set: A Cute, Inexpensive Housewarming Gift

I don’t like bath rugs, I find them a bit unhygienic.  Instead, I use “floor towels”, or whatever the name is. They are washed every time we do laundry, and they seem to last at least a couple of years if one has two or three to rotate them.

Because the bathroom is small, standard-size floor towels don’t fit, so I made towel rugs with some old towels that were otherwise headed for the trash bin, and with some new towels (I could have bought the fabric by the yard too) I made matching hand towels. It would also make for a lovely handmade towel set for gifting.

How to make a personalized towel set

  1. Out of a large towel, I  cut two identical pieces of the desired size and discarded the “bad spots”.
  2. On a piece of durable fabric, I traced feet. I then placed this fabric on one of the pieces of towels I cut and traced it with a zigzag stitch.
  3. I cut outside the zigzag, joined both pieces of towel fabric, and covered the edges with matching fabric. I sewed some curvy lines inside to keep them from separating (like you would do with a quilt).
  4. I bought new hand towels and sewed an edge from the same matching fabric. I could have also made hands appliques by tracing her hands, but this is more complex than feet, so I went for an easy approach.

Buy ready-made floor towels, and hand towels, and sew the appliques if you are doing this for a gift.

I’d personally only use recycled towels for myself, it’s my own towel, and I am saving it from the landfill just a bit longer.

A personalized bathroom rug on the cheap, what’s not to love about it?!

What’s even better about this project, you don’t really need a sewing machine (though that makes it easier). You can make combinations with other similar or complementary fabrics, like this other version.

What did you use for the trim around the bath bath mat?

The same fabric I used for the footsteps.

It’s cotton fabric leftover from other projects. 😀

Thanks A*. It's a good way of personalizing their towels, and remind them which belong where. They also love that they are involved in the making, even if it's only temporarily lending a hand (or foot). Little Mango loves stepping onto the footprints when she comes out of the shower.

      Homemade bias tape.

  3. I really really love this idea! (especially with the idea of matching hand-towels)
