Cheap Boho Decor, Ideas and Inspiration for a Modern Bohemian Room on a Budget
Looking for some cheap boho decor ideas? We got you! But, what’s “boho” anyway?
Boho, Bohemian, hippie, and boho-chic are all words for a popular design and decor style. It is characterized by an earthier, relaxed, “natural” style, with vintage items and natural materials making two of its defining looks.
The boho style
I am not going to get in the weeds with the history and precise (imprecise?) definition of this style, that’s not my thing. Boho is one of those things that “you know when you see it”. Find inspiration here to bring out your circa 2000 inner Sienna Miller and make your space a calming, artsy, groovy, neo-hippie paradise.
These are some of the must-have elements in boho style.
- Natural materials (like jute rugs, natural fiber baskets, bamboo decor, etc.)
- Earthy colors (browns, deep greens, rust reds, earthy yellows, etc.)
- Plants and flowers (channel your inner plant mom!)
- Light walls (mostly white, with the occasional dramatic color thrown in)
- Relaxed and casual (great for those of us not too obsessed with order, say)
- Crochet, macramé and other fiber arts (hang grandma’s old hippie dress as wall decor, use her old crochet items and hippie scarfs)
Shopping for cheap boho decor ideas
One of the best things about the boho style is that it can be attained on a tight budget. Vintage, second-hand, thrifted and heirloom objects are the spice that give the modern boho home decor its characteristic “flavor”.
I have included a few online shopping ideas, but remember, if you can stop by your local thrift stores and find these things, even better, and you know, budget and Mama Earth-friendlier.
- Thrift stores
- Second-hand shops
- Vintage shops
- Garage sales
Where to get free boho home decor
Not everything has to cost money, ya’ know. Get the word out, your own family or friends’ moms and grandmas may have attics-full of stuff that they’d be glad to let you have, especially if you show them how appreciative you are of their vintage stuff. They may be glad to let them go to a “good home”.
Bake them some cookies in appreciation while you are it. 🙂
- Grandma’s (or mom’s) attic
- Street-side finds
- Exchange groups
- Craigslist (or local equivalent)
- Local Facebook groups
- Nextdoor
- Hand-me-downs
Inexpensive boho pillows
Boho-chic is all about the pillows. Don’t be stingy with pillows, but don’t be boring with them either. Forget about matchy-matchy! Get one of each, just remember to stick to a common theme or color (creamy white works great). Raid the thrift store for pillow covers that are still in good shape and give them a good wash (mind the instructions). Be mindful of bed-bugs protocol, if that’s a problem where you live.
Boho wall decor on a budget
Great thing about boho decor? You don’t need to hang a Picasso on your wall to make it. Bohemian decor on a budget is where it’s at, and there’s lots of ideas to choose from.
Fiber arts are the hallmark of the boho and hippie style. If you are crafty, you can make your own macrame or crochet decor. Or you can buy it. Or you can hang beautiful pieces of fabric on your wall. Pretty vintage crochet table runners and tablecloths are great as wall decor too.
If you are going to hang pictures, floral and nature images are best. Some vintage painting reproductions also work well in boho-style decoration. Macrame or natural wood-framed mirrors are perfect too.
Cheap boho furniture
Mismatched furniture? Check! Hand-me-down items? Check! Mom’s old stuff with a bit of flakey paint? Check. That old wicker princess chair? Check! For everything else there’s Masterc…, er, paint. Grab a can of chalk paint (easy stuff to use), a good brush, and paint that thing (not the actual valuable vintage stuff, please!).
Remember to raid grandma’s attic and garage for cool stuff that may last seen the light of day in the 70s, roam your local Craiglist for free stuff, and spread the word on Facebook (Facebook is like Tiktok, but with text, mom can help).

You don’t even need furniture? Pile pillows galore, and you’re already up to a good start.
Furniture is good too, go for wicker, bamboo, and natural wood. And plants, lots of them!
