Handmade Felt Christmas Ornaments

Handmade felt christmas ornaments

Ever since I left my parents’ home I don’t remember ever owning a Christmas tree. At most I would scatter a few ornaments here and there; most years I couldn’t even bother to do that. Amazing how having kids changes everything.

Little Mango wants a tree, so I told her we would have some sort of tree. What is certain is that it will not be a regular tree, I still can’t be bothered; we’ll see what I come up with.

In the meantime we had a grand time making our own, very simple ornaments.

We used things I already had. I raided my felt stash and found some notions I never use and that I got in one of those “granny boxes” I have bought on eBay (I’ve got some really cool stuff in those, like darning eggs and antique scissors).

I used embroidery stabilizer to back the felt ornaments, and hand-sewed them to it. It makes them more stiff and durable. I pulled the thread tight this makes the baubles bend in the center, giving them a bit of volume.

Now I just have to come up with a DIY tree. I am thinking of going into the jungle in front of here and find some twigs or something like that.

Do you have any ideas you could share?

  1. I like the branches idea too. Our artificial tree broke at the end of last season and we can't afford to replace it this year. I've been pondering hanging ornmanents differently this year too. I was thinking of some garland draped around with ornaments hanging from the dips – could be sparkly kind or evergreen kind. I was also trying to figure out how to hang them at our windows… Maybe between each vertical on the railing of our stairs? You could hang some from the bars on your 4-poster bedframe…

I envy you! You've made such beautiful ornaments! The idea of the twig tree is great, but I don't doubt that you'll come up with a fantastic idea. Can't wait to see.I am dying to make some fabric ornaments myself, but it seems there'll be no Christmas fun for me this year! Boo-hoo…

  4. I think a few branches with greenery, in a pot, with a red ribbon, will suffice! My own decorations consist solely of a nativity set I purchased as a newly-wed. My boyfriend has kids and he has a tree. You parents go all out.

  5. I like the sound of a DIY twig tree! The ornaments are cute, they remind me of the felt ornaments we used to hang on our advent tree hanger when I was a child, which I just wrote about yesterday oddly enough!
