Birthday Banner and Nautical Flags

How about we end the week with a happy note? And what is happier  than bunting? Well, colorful, birthday flag banners, of course!

I made these for my husband’s “surprise” birthday party back in May. Notice the scare quotes, my husband’s friend forgot it was a surprise and called him to confirm the time before the party. Heh!

The good thing is that this can be put into an envelope and taken out every time there is a birthday, which we did when it was Little Mango’s birthday last month.

The flags are basically triangles cut out of scrapbooking paper and letter hand-drawn and cut out of blue paper. Then I glued the letter to the paper and passed the flags through the serger leaving a long string at the beginning and end. Easy peasy.

To separate the words I left a blank flag in between and hand-drew a birthday cake on it. And there’s our official birthday banner.

I forgot to take a picture of the actual thing, but instead of writing something on the store-bought cake for my husband’s party (I had no time to bake one), I made two nautical flags spelling the letters B and K (my husband’s initials). He laughed when he saw it.

As it turns out the flags had another meaning I failed to take into consideration: They are also the international signs for “dangerous cargo” and  “man overboard!”.

I am happy to report that the party was fun, and nobody fell over the balcony rail all day.
